#6 Messiah the Rock of Salvation: Giver of Living Water

In Mark 3:16, Jesus changed Simon’s name from Simon to Peter. In the Greek language, Peter is pronounced Cephus, and the name Cephus means stone or rock. Why did Jesus name Simon Peter? Because Jesus knew that God the Father would give Peter power to tell the world that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Amid the doubt of the disciples, Peter was the one of the disciples who called Jesus the Christ, the Son of the living God (see Mat. 16: 16). When Peter made that declaration, Jesus called him Peter again saying, “Thou art Peter, and upon this rock (upon this declaration and faith that I am the Christ, the Son of the living God), I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it (Mat. 16: 18. Further, we can conclude that Jesus is identifying himself as the Rock of Salvation. The reality that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God, the Rock of Salvation, the solid foundation upon which every Christian stands. However, as mentioned before, every Messianic Truth must hold consistency with the prophets who came before. Evidence given to us by the prophets suggest that the Messiah being the Rock or Stone is a recurring theme throughout the scriptures. Let us examine the prophets, beginning with Moses.

·      In Exodus 17:6 KJV, Moses wrote of the first time God would use a rock as a means of salvation for the Children of Israel. According to Moses, God said, “Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.” God used a rock to provide water to the Children of Israel. Had he not, they would have died from thirst. Another important thing to notice is that God said, “I will stand upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink.” This is important to remember, because, in a later verse, God will use a rock as a means of salvation for the Children of Israel again. But the next time would be different.

·      In Numbers 20:8 KJV, God uses a rock but does something a little different than the time before in Exodus 17:6. This time, God said, “Take the rod, and gather thou the assembly together, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water, and thou shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock: so thou shalt give the congregation and their beasts drink.” Notice, this time God does not say that he will be standing upon the rock. This time, God does not tell them to smite or hit the rock, but he tells Moses and Aaron to speak to the rock. One more thing we should notice about this verse is that God refers to this rock as a person. God said, “…speak ye unto the rock before their eyes; and it shall give forth his water…” This is the first time throughout Scripture that the rock is referred to as a person. Instead of God saying, “it shall give forth water”, like he did in Exodus 17:6, he said “and it shall give forth “his” water.

This was a very frustrating moment for Moses. He was very irritated by the continual murmuring and complaining of the Children of Israel, and he made the mistake of actually hitting the rock instead of speaking to the rock. We can find evidence of this in Numbers 20:10-11 KJV that said, “And Moses and Aaron gathered the congregation together before the rock, and he said unto them, Hear now, ye rebels; must we fetch you water out of this rock? And Moses lifted up his hand, and with his rod he smote the rock twice: and the water came out abundantly, and the congregation drank, and their beasts also.” It is apparent that Moses was furious with the Children of Israel, and, out of his anger, he smote the rock twice, not realizing that this time the rock was actually a person. His anger blocked him from fully understanding what God had told him concerning the rock. This is a perfect example to us a Christians as to why we should be angry when there is a cause to be angry, but we must allow ourselves to be sober and diligent so that we do not sin in the midst of our anger. Let us be intentional about depending and dwelling the goodness of God in the midst of our anger and not the sins that man commit against us, because Moses becomes more aware of God’s revelation concerning the rock when he focuses on the goodness of God. In Deuteronomy 32:4, Moses said, “He (God) is the Rock, his work is perfect: for all his ways are judgment: a God of truth and without iniquity, just and right is he. (KJV)

            As mentioned before, king David was also a prophet. In the next few verses, we will discover how consistent king David’s revelation was with the prophet Moses. The reality that God is the Rock of Salvation is a recurring theme in the writings of David is evident in how many times he actually uses the phrase.

·      In 2 Samuel 22:2-3 KJV, it is written, “And he (David) said, The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.

·      In 2 Samuel 22:32 KJV, David said, “For who is God, save the LORD? and who is a rock, save our God?”

·      In 2 Samuel 22:47 KJV, David said, “The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and exalted be the God of the rock of my salvation.

·      In Psalm 18:2 KJV, David said, “The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.”

·      In Psalm 27:5 KJV, David said, “For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.”

·      In Psalm 31:3 KJV, David said “For thou art my rock and my fortress; therefore for thy name's sake lead me, and guide me.”

·      In Psalm 61:2 KJV, David said “From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I.”

·      In Psalm 71:3, David said, “KJV Be thou my strong habitation, whereunto I may continually resort: thou hast given commandment to save me; for thou art my rock and my fortress.

·      In Psalm 78:20 KJV, David said, “Behold, he smote the rock, that the waters gushed out, and the streams overflowed; can he give bread also? can he provide flesh for his people?

·      In Psalm 78:35 KJV, David said, “And they remembered that God was their rock, and the high God their redeemer.

·      In Psalm 92:15 KJV, David said, “To shew that the LORD is upright: he is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in him.

As mentioned before, Jesus changing Simon’s name to Peter (also called Cephus meaning rock or stone) is because Peter would be the one to identify Jesus as the Christ, the Son of the living God in the midst of the disciples’ perceived uncertainty. In essence, Jesus named Simon Peter (a rock) because Peter would be the one to identify Jesus as the Messiah, the Rock of Salvation. However, it just wouldn’t be right to discuss the Messiah being the Rock of Salvation without mentioning the prophet that God ordained to be the forerunner for the Messiah, John the Baptist. The fact that John became known as the Baptist or Baptizer is interesting, because John’s father, Zachariah, was a Levitical priest (a priest from the lineage of Levi). His father’s job was to offer incense unto the Lord in the temple. But where did John learn the practice of baptism? He had to have learned it from his father, and his father must have learned it from the Aaron and the Levitical priests who followed. In Leviticus 16: 24, Aaron, the first high priest of the Levitical priesthood, was commanded to bathe himself before he was allowed to go into the holy of holies. After bathing or baptizing himself in water, he had to put on his priestly garments before going to make sin offerings before the Lord.

As mentioned before, John the Baptist was the prophet born into the lineage of the Levitical priesthood, and he was ordained by God to be the forerunner for the coming Christ. This means that he would be the prophet that would appear before the coming of the Christ. John understood, through the guidance of the Holy Ghost, that Jesus is the Lord. John understood that Jesus is the Son of God, and he understood that Jesus is the Lamb of God (Mark 1:9-11; John 1: 34; Jn. 1:29-36). Since, John’s purpose was to prepare the people for the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ, and it was also his job to prepare the way of the Lord. For example, John preached the coming of the Messiah, and he baptized the people to prepare them for the coming of Jesus Christ, the Holy One of God. John also baptized Jesus, because Jesus would be “called an high priest after the order of Melchizedek” and “the one mediator between God and man” (see Hebrews 5:10; 1Tim 2:5; 1John 2:1). Jesus was and is called to be an high priest after the order of Melchizedek, because the scriptures provide no record of Melchizedek’s mother or father. Like Melchizedek, Jesus the Messiah had no earthly father like the Levitical priests, because God is his Father.

Notice what happened to Jesus after John’s baptism. Luke 3:22 describes what happened to Jesus after John’s baptism, saying, “And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.” Let us compare the difference between Aaron and the Levitical priesthood’s baptism with Jesus’s baptism. Aaron’s baptism was completed before he was allowed to go into the holy of holies of the temple. Jesus’s baptism was completed before the Spirit of God, in its fullness, came upon Jesus in the bodily shape of a dove. Aaron’s baptism was done before he made sin offerings for the people, and Jesus’s baptism was done before he offered himself as the one sacrifice for sin (see Leviticus 16:28 Heb. 10:12). In Matthew 3:11 KJV, John the Baptist was baptizing by the river Jordan, and he told the Children of Israel “I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire.” John used the word fire to provide a picture of how those who believed in the Christ would be given power when the Holy Ghost comes upon them. You can compare this with what Jesus said about the Holy Ghost in Acts 1:8 KJV saying, “But ye shall receive power, when the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth." Just as John the Baptist used “fire” to represent the power of the Holy Ghost that would come upon the believers whom Jesus baptizes with the Holy Ghost, Jesus used the term “living water” to represent that same power.

·      In John 4:10-14, Jesus told the Samaritan woman speaks of the power that is in the living water, and the power that he speaks of is the living water’s power to give eternal life. And it reads as follows:

10 Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the gift of God, and who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of him, and he would have given thee living water. 11 The woman saith unto him, Sir, thou hast nothing to draw with, and the well is deep: from whence then hast thou that living water? 12 Art thou greater than our father Jacob, which gave us the well, and drank thereof himself, and his children, and his cattle? 13 Jesus answered and said unto her, Whosoever drinketh of this water shall thirst again: 14 But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life. (KJV)

·      In John 7:37-39, Jesus stood to proclaim what the living water would empower the believers of the Messiah to do, and that is the power to witness. John 7:37-39 reads as follows:

37 In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. 38 He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. 39 (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified). (KJV)

            Jesus said, “He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.” The living water is the Holy Ghost, and the Holy Ghost is the one who empowers those who trust in Jesus Christ as their Savior. In this moment Jesus was talking about the witnessing power that his followers would have to let the world know that Jesus is the Christ that has come into the world, and this witnessing power that will help the followers of Jesus effectively bring others into belief in Jesus Christ. This witnessing power is the living water that will bring many into living water. They only have to drink the living water, and to drink this living water one must continually believe that Jesus is the Christ the Son of the living God and receive him into their lives as their Lord and Savior.

·      In Matthew 7:25 KJV, Jesus provides a description of what it means for one to build their lives upon the solid rock. In essence, one’s life can only living forever by having faith in Jesus Christ who is the rock of salvation. In Matthew 7:25, Jesus said, “And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. On the other hand, the one who builds his house on the sand (without Christ in his life), he will have a great fall (see Matt. 7:27).

·      In Matthew 16:18 KJV, Jesus tells Peter and the disciples that not even the gates of hell can prevail against those whose faith is in Jesus Christ, the Son of the living God. Jesus said, “And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

·      In 1 Corinthians 10:4 KJV, that apostle Paul said, “And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.”

The Apostle Paul also shares consistency with Jesus and the prophets who came before him, because he too confirmed that Jesus was that rock of salvation who followed the Children of Israel and provided them with water for their survival. Paul also, mentioned a “spiritual drink” that comes from the “spiritual rock.” That spiritual drink is the Holy Ghost, and that spiritual rock is Jesus Christ. In Romans 9:33 KJV, Paul makes a bold statement concerning that spiritual rock, saying, “Behold, I lay in Sion a stumblingstone and rock of offence: and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.” Those who trust Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior shall not be ashamed. The opposite must be true for those who do not trust Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior. Those who do not trust Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior will be offended and they will be put to shame.

Let us pray,

            Heavenly Father, thank you for always having a plan to save us. Thank you for rescuing us from the wilderness of death. You gave your only Son to be our Rock of Salvation. Your son, Jesus, gives us living water, who is the Holy Ghost. Faith in Jesus Christ, the rock of our salvation, is our eternal security and shelter amid the various storms of life. Help us to always trust in your Son Jesus as our Rock of Salvation. Continue to pour out your Spirit upon us so that we can be endowed with power to turn the hearts of men to the only Rock of Salvation, who is your Son, Jesus the Christ. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ we pray, Amen

جیسا کہ پہلے ذکر کیا گیا ہے، یسوع نے سائمن کا نام بدل کر پیٹر رکھ دیا (جسے سیفس بھی کہا جاتا ہے جس کا مطلب چٹان یا پتھر ہے) کیونکہ پطرس وہ شخص ہوگا جو یسوع کو مسیح، زندہ خدا کے بیٹے کے طور پر پہچانے گا، شاگردوں کی غیر یقینی صورتحال کے درمیان۔ جوہر میں، یسوع نے شمعون پیٹر (ایک چٹان) کا نام دیا کیونکہ پطرس یسوع کو مسیحا، نجات کی چٹان کے طور پر شناخت کرنے والا ہوگا۔ تاہم، اس نبی کا ذکر کیے بغیر مسیحا کو نجات کی چٹان ہونے پر بحث کرنا درست نہیں ہوگا جسے خدا نے مسیحا، یوحنا بپٹسٹ کے پیش رو ہونے کا حکم دیا تھا۔ حقیقت یہ ہے کہ یوحنا بپتسمہ دینے والے یا بپتسمہ دینے والے کے طور پر جانا جاتا ہے دلچسپ ہے، کیونکہ یوحنا کے والد، زکریا، ایک لاوی کاہن تھے (لیوی کے نسب سے ایک پادری)۔ اس کے والد کا کام ہیکل میں رب کو بخور چڑھانا تھا۔ لیکن یوحنا نے بپتسمہ کی مشق کہاں سے سیکھی؟ اسے اپنے باپ سے سیکھنا چاہیے تھا، اور اس کے باپ نے اسے ہارون اور لاوی کاہنوں سے سیکھا ہو گا جو اس کی پیروی کرتے تھے۔ احبار 16:24 میں، ہارون، لاوی کی کہانت کے پہلے اعلیٰ کاہن، کو حکم دیا گیا تھا کہ وہ اپنے آپ کو غسل دے اس سے پہلے کہ وہ مقدس مقامات میں جانے کی اجازت دے۔ پانی میں نہانے یا بپتسمہ دینے کے بعد، اُسے رب کے حضور گناہ کی قربانیاں پیش کرنے سے پہلے اپنے پجاری کپڑے پہننے ہوتے تھے۔

جیسا کہ پہلے ذکر کیا جا چکا ہے، یوحنا بپتسمہ دینے والا وہ نبی تھا جو لاوی کے کہانت کے نسب میں پیدا ہوا تھا، اور اسے خدا کی طرف سے آنے والے مسیح کے پیش رو کے لیے مقرر کیا گیا تھا۔ اس کا مطلب یہ ہے کہ وہ نبی ہوگا جو مسیح کے آنے سے پہلے ظاہر ہوگا۔ جان نے روح القدس کی رہنمائی سے سمجھا کہ یسوع ہی خداوند ہے۔ یوحنا سمجھ گیا کہ یسوع خدا کا بیٹا ہے، اور اس نے سمجھا کہ یسوع خدا کا برّہ ہے (مرقس 1:9-11؛ یوحنا 1:34؛ یوحنا 1:29-36)۔ چونکہ، یوحنا کا مقصد لوگوں کو خُداوند یسوع مسیح کی آمد کے لیے تیار کرنا تھا، اور یہ اُس کا کام بھی تھا کہ وہ خُداوند کی راہ کو تیار کرے۔ مثال کے طور پر، یوحنا نے مسیح کے آنے کی منادی کی، اور اس نے لوگوں کو بپتسمہ دیا تاکہ وہ یسوع مسیح، خدا کے قدوس کی آمد کے لیے تیار ہوں۔ یوحنا نے یسوع کو بپتسمہ بھی دیا، کیونکہ یسوع کو "ملک صدق کے حکم کے مطابق ایک اعلیٰ کاہن" اور "خدا اور انسان کے درمیان ایک ثالث" کہا جائے گا (دیکھیں عبرانیوں 5:10؛ 1 تیم 2:5؛ 1 یوحنا 2:1)۔ یسوع ملک صدق کے حکم کے بعد ایک اعلیٰ کاہن تھا اور کہلاتا ہے، کیونکہ صحیفے ملک صدق کی ماں یا باپ کا کوئی ریکارڈ فراہم نہیں کرتے۔ ملک زیدک کی طرح، یسوع مسیح کا لاوی کے پادریوں کی طرح کوئی زمینی باپ نہیں تھا، کیونکہ خدا اس کا باپ ہے۔
